A cosmopolitan coastal city
Limassol is the 2nd in size city on the island, with its local population reaching about 135,000. It has long been established as a tourist resort, offshore business centre and holiday or permanent home to people of various nationalities.
It is the largest port on the island and headquarters of many offshore companies due to the friendly tax regime of the island. Naturally, all the amenities are here to cater for the locals, tourists and all foreign nationals and their families living here. Hotels, a luxury yacht marina, restaurants, coffee shops, supermarkets, retail shops, department stores, theatres, cinema multiplexes, bowling centres, water sports are all part of the excellent infrastructure that supports the city. Also, education has long been well catered for here with a selection of reputable international schools, from pre-primary to higher education. Their main language is English and children of many nationalities study here, amongst them a large number of Greek-Cypriot children.
The coast of Limassol has the longest sandy beaches on the island and their combined stretch is roughly 30km. You can choose the crystal clear waters of lady’s mile next to the Akrotiri Salt lake nature reserve or the rugged beauty of Curium beach on the West of the main city. On the East of Limassol you can find Governors beach sandy bay with its busy fish restaurants. East and West of this bay you can find small, quaint and quiet sandy coves for those who seek privacy and don’t mind the short walk.
The seafront of the main city of Limassol stretches from Limassol’s Promenade (Molos), all the way to the Meridien hotel in the East.
Because of the absence or the bending of planning laws in the late 70s – 80s, some hotels and apartments have been built directly on the beachfront whereas today beachfront protection buffer zones protect the beachfront from building development. A very limited amount of private villas have also been built directly on the frontline.
The apartment blocks which are directly frontline are very few and the ones which are available for sale are very rare hence at a premium.
